What the Heart Desires

Dictionary.com defines desire like this, based on the Random House Dictionary published in 2013:

“DESIRE, CRAVING, LONGING, YEARNING suggest feelings that impel one to the attainment or possession of something. DESIRE is a strong feeling, worthy or unworthy, that impels to the attainment or possession of something that is (in reality or imagination) within reach: a desire for success. CRAVING implies a deep and imperative wish for something, based on need or hunger…. A LONGING is an intense wish, generally repeated or enduring, for something that is at the moment beyond reach but may be attainable at some future time: a longing to visit Europe. YEARNING suggests persistent, uneasy, and sometimes wistful or tender longing.”

All these definitions sound like feelings an individual is unable to control, and such is the way of romance. Authors of erotic romance novels further explore and exploit the tender, sometimes all-consuming feelings a woman has for a man.
Long before Thomas Hardy penned Tess of the d’Urbervilles in 1891 innocent women were being tempted by men bent on their own pleasure.
Modern day erotic novels about heterosexual couples focus on the true, strong feelings a heroine develops for the hero. She craves sexual satisfaction and longs for her man to crave her presence with the same all-consuming intensity.
In And You, Virginia, Are No Lady, my latest erotic novel, Virginia Hampton is a respected lawyer forced to hide from the public her persistent desire for Gabe Count, the private eye she hires to help prove her client innocent. He’s like an itch she’s not allowed to scratch in public.
Virginia had a crush on Gabe, the school bad boy, but never gave in to her desire. Her father would not have approved of Gabe. Now, they are both adults, their social status still miles apart, but Virginia’s desire for Gabe impels her to be with him despite the possible consequences. Their stolen moments of togetherness are all that makes Virginia’s life endurable.
Gabe still brandishes his bad-boy image, but the years he spent on the Atlanta police force indicate he’s changed. The gun shot he suffered at the hands of a culprit who later walked out of jail, freed on a technicality while Gabe endured months of painful rehab, turned him against the legal system. He resigned from the force and became a well-respected private eye, and despite his mindset regarding lawyers, he wants Virginia in his bed with a craving he is unable to squelch unless she is in his arms.

On Writing Hot

Do you like Fifty Shades of Grey and Sylvia Day’s books?

Have you tried writing one? You might surprise yourself.

I know the hot novel I’m currently working on is going in the right direction when I find myself squirming in the seat as I write. The more squirming I do, the tighter the sexual tension I’m writing, even when I’m writing a sweet romance.

You do not have to be describing a love scene to make the reader squirm. Put two people attracted to each other in the same room, do a good job of describing the dance they do leading up to some future first kiss, and you’ll have your readers squirming in their seats.

Both E. L. James and Sylvia Day are masters of describing this dance.

Things like:
He smiled.
She touched her hair.
He cocked an eye-brow.
She moistened her lips…

These simple well-placed actions can have your readers squirming in their seats.

Have you ever heard Linda Howard’s present one of her excellent workshop on Sexual Tension, The Twelve Stages of Human Intimacy? She nails the steps we all go through without realizing it whenever we meet someone new, male or female. We have all been guilty of checking out a man from across the room, or of flipping our long hair off our shoulder once we’ve caught his eye. These are all part of the sexual tension dance couples participate in that leads to intimacy.

Deepak Chopra has narrowed the dance down even more, listing what he calls the seven stages of love, attraction, infatuation, courtship, intimacy, surrender, passion and ecstasy. These are the backbone of any good romance, but stretch out the infatuation and the courtship by making your attracted couple do the sexual tension dance and the rewards are multiplied for the couple doing the dance in your novel, and for the reader rapidly turning the pages while he/she reads your book.

The intimacy, the surrender, and the passion leading up to the ecstasy and the resolution are all the sweeter because the couple has done the dance while your reader has squirmed in her chair while reading your book.

I try to exploit my character’s sexual tension on every page I write.

What a Lady Wants… a Lady Gets

What a Lady Wants… a Lady Gets, if she’s lucky.

What if what the heroine wants is not good for her? Of for the hero?

What if the two are like poison to each other and bring out the worst in each other?

Or he gives her hives?

What if he is exactly what she needs, but the kind of man her father made her promise she’d stay away from?

If you’ve always wanted to write an erotic novel but don’t have any idea where to start, this is the perfect plot. There are plenty of opportunities for great conflict, and if the heroine is irresistibly drawn to the bad boy hero, you’ll find lots of opportunities to write hot sex scenes.

With luck, you’ll find an editor who likes determined heroines.

Now, what if the heroine can’t please herself and her family? The unlucky in love heroine. What will she decide to do then?

Okay, let’s suppose the hero is her absolute worst choice for a mate, but the heroine’s constantly drawn to him, and her thoughts go to him whenever the hero is not around.

Can she make it work? your heroine might wonder.

Not if she tries to change him, and not if she expects him to change, but if the heroine loves him, warts and all, she can overlook his faults if the hero has enough good qualities to attract and sustain her love.

No woman wants a doormat for a mate. Give your hero backbone. Let the couple disagree on principle, but lovingly come back together through a little compromise.

Don’t make your heroine a barracuda eating her way through life at someone else’s expense. She’ll be unlikeable. A little assertiveness goes a long way. Let your heroine stand up for her beliefs, but refuse to step on someone else’s toes when she does.

Men prefer their women soft and yielding. I like to write about a feminine heroine with unshakeable inner strength. Like the early settlers who crossed the prairie in wagon trains, a woman never knows what she’ll be called on to bear, and that strength will come in handy if her mate loses his job or is disabled and she has to become head of the household.

It’s all right to set goals and attempt to reach them, but have your characters take time to lend others a helping hand.

I’ve been lucky finding a publisher who liked my strong heroine.

In Christmas Eve, my erotic novel published by Evernight Publishing, Eve Adohr runs a successful real estate company, but her latest relationship just tanked. Casino owner Nick St. Clair fears the women he meets are all barracudas, nipping at his heals to get their hands on his money, so he avoids close relationships until he’s snowbound with Eve.

Here’s a blurb:

In a blinding snowstorm on Christmas Eve, the jaded owner of a posh Las Vegas casino mistakes the stranded real estate agent at his door for the classy call girl he’s expecting to heat up his holiday.

Passions ignite. Eve has learned men believe bedding her the most direct route to her wealth. Nick’s female companions always want the keys to his Ferrari and to his safe deposit box, never to his heart, so he distrusts the entire lot and expects to simply walk away unscathed when his brief time with Eve ends.

Neither expects to give marriage a try, but hearts have a way of going where cautious souls refuse, and after getting it on for six days and nights Nick and Eve discover without love their former lives were little more than empty shells.

Here’s an excerpt:

Finally. Nick St. Clair took one last look around. Everything seemed in order. Don’t let your irritation at your hired date’s tardiness show. She might have a reasonable excuse for being late.

Straightening the lapels of his hip-length robe, he crossed to the door. Beneath the robe, black silk pajama pants provided minimal warmth but kept him decent.

“I’m sorry to disturb you,” the statuesque woman on his porch said with a bright smile, “but I’ve done something really stupid and wondered if you—”

“Don’t just stand there.” Nick opened the door wider, anxious to see what his credit card had purchased this time. “Come in.”

“Thanks.” After a slight hesitation, the woman stepped gracefully inside. Ice crystals clung to the fine wool scarf wrapped loosely around her neck, and to her stylish boots. She was all bundled up in a long coat, but Nick’s mind’s eye had no difficulty sketching what he hoped was hidden underneath.

The lady wore far too many clothes.

“I’m afraid my boots are wet.” She glanced first at him. His welcoming smile seemed to stun her. She stared at her boots. “Where would you like me to stand?”

“By the fire.” Nick indicated the hearth. “You look frozen.” Although in need of a woman, he had no desire to bed an icicle. He wasn’t that desperate. Yet.

She crossed the room at a slow pace, her fluid movements an aphrodisiac to him, although each tentative step left behind a patch of melting ice. Sex-deprived man that he was, his living room suddenly felt too warm. Things were looking up.

“I’ve been busy on the computer,” he said, surprised by the sudden gruffness of his usually smooth voice. He joined her before the fire. “I hadn’t noticed it had begun to snow.”

A soft-looking, hooded leather coat covered her to her ankles. What lay beneath all those layers?

To his surprise, the unknown whetted his appetite. “Here, let me help you out of that coat.”

“No.”

No? Her response drew Nick up short.

“That won’t be necessary,” she said, her sexy eyes wide. “I’ll just keep it on, since I’m hoping we’ll be going right back out.”

Out? Was this some sort of sex game played to excite him?

“Problem is…” She paused, smiling up at him, even daring to bat her eyes.

Unusual eyes, those. Emeralds, flecked with gold, and about all Nick could see of his date at the moment. He found the situation so damned erotic he began to sweat.

“… my car slid in the ditch next door,” she added, drawing his thoughts from what treasures her long coat might hide. “I wouldn’t bother you, but this mountain seems to be out of my cell phone’s service area and I wondered if I might use your phone to call for a tow.”

The dimple nestled in the satiny cheek nearest Nick flirted with him as she spoke. Intriguing. Might as well play along. “Sure.”

Author Flame Arden sounds like a well-bred Southern lady. Nothing could be further from the truth. She claims to write sex scenes with ‘squirm factor’. You be the judge as she opens the boudoir door to one-man, one-woman erotic relationships and gives you a glimpse inside. A happy and lasting marriage has prepared Flame to write sizzling love scenes, and she doesn’t disappoint, and she’s giving away a free download of Christmas Eve to one lucky commenter.

5 Star Review for Christmas Eve!

Review:

Well, you shouldn’t be reading Christmas Eve alone on Christmas Eve, if you can help it, because it’s so hot, you’ll burn the house down! Flame is a new author to me, but I can’t help thinking I know the style, so maybe she writes under another name as well. It’s super nova hot, sexy, erotic, evocative, and sweet, all at the same time. You will love it, I promise.

Nick is holed up in his mountain hideaway near Las Vegas, waiting for his paid companion for Christmas Eve to show up. When a realtor listing the house next door runs her classic car off the road and shows up on Nick’s doorstep, can he be blamed for thinking she is his high priced call girl? However, the magnetism between the two causes Eve to fall into Nick’s bed as well as his heart.

Both of them labor under misconceptions about love and are reluctant to commit for some of the same reasons, but their lonely backgrounds also play a part. When Eve is forced to take Nick to the hospital, and she learns his misconception of her, she retreats to nurse her broken heart, but Nick has changed his mind about life, love and the pursuit of happiness. Can Eve do any different?

On Writing Erotic Love Scenes

There’s a difference in writing erotic love scenes and in writing dirty. The primary difference I see is in the language used to describe the events. Word choice determines if a sexual encounter between physically attracted couple described on paper will read as a love scene or a raunchy retelling of events.

I like to think I don’t write dirty. I don’t write erotica. I do write about the intimacy shared by an aroused couple deeply attracted to each other who experience and act on their strong sexual desires.

This does not mean they have hot monkey sex in public. They might, but are just as likely to visit a deserted gold course late at night for such public displays of affection.

My personal favorite location is in an elevator. The likelihood of being interrupted makes the daring tryst all the more exciting.

In erotic novels, the sexual dance the couple enjoys prior to completing the act lasts far longer than the act itself. This is where word choice plays an important part.

Here’s an excerpt from Christmas Eve, my upcoming release by Evernight Publishing:

He’d insisted the architect include this exterior wall of glass in his plans, and now was doubly appreciative of his decision. His original intent a selfish one: to admire the dense stand of trees on his property while taking a bath.

Nick grinned. He’d never dreamed that someday he’d be standing on the outside, looking in. A far more delightful view.

Eve’s upraised arms lifted her breasts to the perfect angle to fill palms already itching to feel her soap-slickened flesh. The gentle spray made Eve’s fair skin glisten.

And Croupier surge to life.

She turned, giving Nick a tempting view of her butt as she tilted her head and rinsed shampoo from her hair. He let his gaze roam freely over her body, caressing the straight line of her perfect back, the gentle curve of her buttocks, the tempting length of her thighs and calves, right down to her carefully painted toenails, all the while with Croupier trying to escape the close confines of Nick’s jeans.

Eve shook her head, sending wet drops in every direction, then tossed back her hair, an action that made her butt shimmy. Nick’s mouth went dry.

And further on:

She turned away for a moment, to put the soap away, he saw, a movement that brought her closer to the window, to his pleased delight. She squeezed something from a tube and began washing her face, allowing him a full frontal view of her glorious body.

Yes, he knew it well. He had loved and admired every inch, but never tired of the sight.

He flattened his palms on the window, forgetting for a moment the wall of glass preventing him from touching that abundance of glowing flesh. Eve tilted her head back, letting the spray stream down her face, rush like waterfalls over her breasts, cascade down her legs.

She shook her head, once again flipping her hair back off her face, then opened her eyes. Not in the least upset to see him standing there, she stepped right up to the glass and beckoned to him, smiling.

He didn’t need a second invitation. Instead, he flew down the steps and around the corner, his heart pounding, his blood running hot. Sometime or other he’d unbuttoned his pants and wool shirt. He shed his boots on the porch, his shirt just inside the kitchen.

His unzipped jeans puddled around his ankles when he rounded the corner leading down the hall and he nearly tripped. With an aggravated kick he freed one foot. Unhampered now, he hurried on, only to skid to a halt just inside the bathroom where Eve waited, her arms outstretched to him.

He peeled out of his jeans, his briefs and socks.

Stepped into the shower.

And let Eve work more of her magic on him.

This is the dance my sexually attracted couple enjoys over and over throughout the book. Just rereading this scene has me squirming in my desk chair, and the two of them were not even sharing the same room for most of this scene.
